The program being the 4th edition is a major project of GTHI, where one hundred and ninety five (195) Mama Put were empowered with LPG complete accessories for free.
The event had in attendance representative from government, various gas plants owners, beneficiaries and the media. Some other guests that graced the event include: Mr. Henry Ikem-Obih (COO, Downstream NNPC), Mrs.Katagum A.F (GGM, Shipping NNPC), Sir Billy Okoye (EDD, PPMC), Alhaji Ilu Auwalu (CEO Ultimate Gas Ltd), Mrs. Ebika O.P (Rep. MD NPSC), Pastor Emma Anekwe, Mrs. Ify Onubogu (COO Instagas), Mr. Imodagbe (Rep. GGM, PAD NNPC), Mr. Eze Ezebilo of NPC, Hon.Chidoka Obinna (Chairman, House of Committee on Environment & Habitat).
The program also had sponsorship from various companies like Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Pipeline Product Marketing Company Limited (PPMC), Nigeria Product Storage Company (NPSC), Ultimate Gas, Techno Oil, Access Bank, National Association of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketers (NALGAM), Nipco, Mob Integrated Service, Instagas, Borkir Gas, NNPC Retail and A-Z.
The event highlighted the following:
- Effects of firewood usage to the health and environment and the need for a fast switch to the use of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG).
- The advantages of using cooking gas as one of the safest source of energy for cooking.
- Safety tips on proper use of cooking gas to hence healthy living.
GTHI members present were Admin Officer, Ndubuisi Ugochukwu (Mr), Program Officer, Ezelobi Faith (Ms), Training and Logistics Officer, Ajuzie Anthony (Mr), volunteer, Collins Enonuh (Mr), volunteer, Onyinye Obiajulu (Ms).
The event started with an opening prayer by two women from mama put (both Muslim and Christian). One of GTHI team member, TelemaDarego (Ms), presented the vision and mission of Gas to Health Initiative, where she spoke extensively on the activities of the organization since the year it was established (2013). Following the introduction of GTHI was the safety demonstration of the use of cooking gas, where the audience where taught the safety tips on proper use of cooking gas.
On arrival of the guests, Wili-Wili of Wazobia FM who anchored the program introduced them to the high table.
Engr. Betty Ugona gave the opening remark and made emphasis on the effect of firewood usage to the health and environment and the need to switch to the use of LP gas. She told a short story of her childhood experience, how her mother who was a local food vendor (mama put) used firewood for cooking which resulted to her having a bad sight at a tender age in the cause of helping her mother. Since then, she vowed to help empower every mama put with the safest source of energy for cooking. She also urged all gas plant in Nigeria to come join the movement in helping mama puts switch to the use of cooking gas.
AlhajiAuwalu Ilu, who was the chairman of the event, gave the keynote presentation where he clearly stated the essence of the empowerment program and a shot drama skit was presented by two members of GTHI. Afterwards, the media and photo session commenced. The photos were taken by Mr. Igwe.
The empowerment session began with presentation of gas cylinders and burners (both single and double) to beneficiaries. All the beneficiaries went home with hearts full of gratitude for the positive impact made in their lives and equally thanked Gas to Health Initiative.
